Plunk!

a door creaks opens, a new arrival pops out, a door slams shut and the truck roars away in the wee hours of the morning on bald and imbalanced tyres that make a disinct sound of the cheap vehicles used in human trafficing.

“show the lad to his desk! quick, off with the lot of you.” the barrel chested supervisor continues barking his instructs toward his minions readying a space for the newest arrival and a rickety wooden chair is rolled out of a back corner on squeaky wheels towards a mammoth old roll top desk facing a wall and sided by a 4×12′ pane of glass that looks out into the night. an incandescent desk lamp with a green glass shade is quickly dusted off, plugged in, placed on the desk and the switch turned on by a gangly gent far past his retirement years.

i then walk over, drape my coat over the back of the chair and then sit in it, surveying the items on the desk. trying to place a use and meaning to the mass of assorted office supplies in a plastic basket in the middle of the desk is wearing me out so i will lie my head down and catch a few winks.
